Barcelos Breaks Silence After Terrifying UFC Vegas 121 Collapse
Raoni Barcelos says he simply fainted after dominating four rounds against Raul Rosas Jr. before losing consciousness in the fifth.
Raoni Barcelos has spoken publicly for the first time since his frightening collapse at UFC Vegas 121, telling fans he is in good spirits and explaining the scary fifth-round finish in simple terms.
"I just fainted," Barcelos said in a video message posted to social media. "I promised a great fight and I fulfilled what I promised."
The 37-year-old Brazilian bantamweight was thoroughly dominating Raul Rosas Jr. through four rounds at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Judges' scorecards had Barcelos ahead 39-37, 39-37, and 39-36 heading into the final round, including a dominant 10-8 fourth round. Then, during a Rosas Jr. takedown attempt in the fifth, Barcelos lost consciousness. His head briefly struck the cage as he went limp, and referee Jason Herzog immediately stopped the contest.
Barcelos was transported to a Level 1 trauma center, where a CT scan came back clear. He was described as stable and conscious shortly after the incident, per reports from LowKick MMA.
Kamaru Usman, who has called several of Barcelos' fights, said the veteran's dominant performance before the collapse was no surprise. "I knew how tough he was, and I've been saying it for a while," Usman said on his podcast. He noted that Barcelos' skill set had always been underrated at the bantamweight level.
The result goes down as a fifth-round TKO victory for Rosas Jr., but the conversation afterward has centered entirely on Barcelos' health. Multiple analysts, including some who have urged the veteran to consider retirement, have praised his performance while expressing concern about the nature of the finish.
Barcelos, who now holds a 17-7 record, has not indicated whether he plans to fight again.
I was at the Apex Saturday night, and I can tell you the room went dead silent when Barcelos collapsed. That kind of silence in a fight venue is something you never want to hear. The man was winning that fight convincingly, 10-8 round and all, and then it just ended in the scariest way possible.
Barcelos handled this with class. No excuses, no complaints about the stoppage, just "I fainted" and gratitude for the medical staff. That says everything about the kind of fighter he is. Usman is right that Barcelos has always been underrated, and this performance proved it again, even in a loss.
The retirement talk is going to get loud, and I get it. But that is a conversation for Barcelos and his doctors, not for us on the internet. Right now, I am just glad he is talking and smiling. The fight game gives us a lot of highs, but nights like Saturday remind you what these people put on the line.
