The scary ending to UFC Vegas 121 was worse than it looked. Glover Teixeira, who coaches Raoni Barcelos, revealed on the Overdogs Brasil Podcast that hospital tests showed brain swelling, confirming the incident was a traumatic brain injury, not a standard knockout.

Barcelos collapsed during a takedown in the fifth round of his main event against Raul Rosas Jr. He went limp and lost consciousness, forcing medical personnel to rush him to a Level 1 trauma center. He has since been discharged.

"There was some swelling in his brain, so it was a traumatic brain injury, and maybe that swelling caused him to black out," Teixeira said. He added that Barcelos was winning the fight when his body simply shut down: "His mind was stronger than his body."

Teixeira stressed that any decision about Barcelos returning to competition "has to be made with a lot of care and caution" alongside family and medical professionals. Dana White echoed the cautious approach, per MMA Mania, calling the incident "horrible to see" and saying he would not push any retirement talk until doctors complete their evaluations.

The UFC drew praise for its medical response on the night. Staff moved quickly to stabilize Barcelos inside the cage, and the promotion arranged immediate transport to the hospital. White credited the on-site medical team, saying the UFC handled it the right way.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

This is terrifying. I was sitting about forty rows back when Barcelos went down and the whole Apex went silent. You could feel it. The difference between a knockout and a traumatic brain injury is not academic. One ends a round. The other can end a life.

Teixeira is right to pump the brakes. Barcelos was winning that fight, which makes this worse. His brain was failing while his skill set was succeeding. That is the cruelest possible version of this sport.

I do not want to hear anyone compare this to Bisping fighting with one eye or any other toughness test. Brain swelling is not a willpower problem. If the doctors say Barcelos should never fight again, that is the answer, full stop. The UFC handled fight night well. Now handle the follow-up the same way.
