David Benavidez is going into business for himself.

The super middleweight star is launching DB Promotions, his own promotional company, after his decade-long contract with promoter Sampson Lewkowicz expires following his December fight. Per Boxing News 24, the new banner will become Benavidez's primary promotional vehicle starting in early 2027.

"This is the last fight on my contract," Benavidez said. "The contract has been 10 years. It's just my time to do my own thing."

Benavidez was quick to credit Lewkowicz for his development. "He's one of the greatest promoters of all time," Benavidez said. But the 29-year-old fighter sees an opportunity to control his career and build something beyond his own fights.

Benavidez plans to sign fighters who train with him and his father, Jose Benavidez Sr. "There's a lot of great fighters I could take under my wing and put them under the promotion company," he said.

The move does not mean Benavidez is cutting ties with the broader boxing infrastructure. He will continue working with PBC and Al Haymon's TGB Promotions, who will help secure funding and book dates for his events.

The timing is significant. Benavidez has been linked to potential superfights with Jai Opetaia, Artur Beterbiev and Oleksandr Usyk. Running his own promotional company could give him more leverage and a larger share of the revenue in those negotiations.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

This is the natural next step for Benavidez and I think it is the right one.

Fighters who promote themselves have a complicated track record. For every Floyd Mayweather who turned self-promotion into a billion-dollar machine, there are a dozen guys who got lost in the business side and let their training suffer. But Benavidez has two things working in his favor: his father is a sharp boxing mind who will keep the gym side honest, and he is staying connected to PBC and Haymon for the infrastructure.

The real play here is the superfight money. If Benavidez is fighting Beterbiev at cruiserweight or chasing Usyk for a farewell bout, the difference between a promotional cut going to Sampson Lewkowicz and going to DB Promotions is millions of dollars. At 29, with the biggest fights of his career ahead of him, keeping that revenue in-house is just smart business.

Ten years with one promoter is a long time. Benavidez earned the right to bet on himself.
