Callum Bisping Suffers First Amateur MMA Loss by TKO
Michael Bisping's son Callum dropped his first amateur MMA fight by second-round TKO at Sundown 2 in Los Angeles.
Callum Bisping, the 25-year-old son of UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, has suffered his first defeat in amateur mixed martial arts. Callum lost to John McCain by second-round technical knockout at Sundown 2 in Los Angeles, per Sherdog.
The loss drops Callum's amateur record to 2-1. He debuted with a unanimous decision win in December and followed that up with a first-round TKO victory in April. Callum is a former NCAA Division II wrestler.
Footage of the stoppage circulated online, with fans drawing comparisons to Michael's iconic knockout loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 100 in their first meeting. The comparison is a cruel one, but fight fans have never been known for restraint.
Michael Bisping has previously expressed reservations about his eldest son pursuing a professional fighting career. The elder Bisping has said Callum has the intelligence to succeed in other fields but has pledged his support if his son chooses MMA.
No reaction from Michael Bisping to the loss has been made public. Callum now faces the same crossroads every young fighter hits after a first loss: figure out what went wrong, get back in the gym, and decide how serious this pursuit really is.
This is what being a fighter's kid looks like. You grow up watching your dad get punched in the face for a living, you see the glory and the damage, and at some point you have to decide if you want in. Callum decided yes, and now he is learning the hard part.
Losing at 2-0 as an amateur is not the end of anything. Most great fighters have early losses. But the scrutiny is different when your last name is Bisping and people are posting your TKO next to your dad's knockout against Henderson. That is a level of pressure most amateurs never deal with.
Michael has been honest about his mixed feelings, and I respect that. He knows better than anyone what this sport takes from you. But if Callum has the wrestling pedigree and the desire, a second-round TKO loss in an amateur fight is a lesson, not a verdict. The kid is 25. He has time.
