Canelo Lands in Riyadh for WBC Title Shot Against Mbilli
Canelo Alvarez has arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of his October 31 WBC super middleweight title challenge against Christian Mbilli.

Canelo Alvarez touched down in Riyadh on Monday morning, welcomed by Faisal Bafarat, chief executive of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority. Jaime Munguia and Rafael Espinoza arrived alongside him. All three fighters are on the October 31 card at The Venue in Riyadh, headlined by Canelo's challenge for Christian Mbilli's WBC super middleweight title.
Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) has not fought in 13 months. Terence Crawford outpointed him in September 2025, stripping him of the undisputed super middleweight crown he had held since unifying all four belts. Now 36, the Mexican star is hunting a title in a division he once owned, and Mbilli stands in the way.
Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) is a Cameroon-born, Montreal-based puncher who won the interim WBC belt by stopping Maciej Sulecki in the first round in June 2025, per Boxing News 24. His last outing was a split draw with Lester Martinez, but the full WBC title is his, and he will be defending it for the first time.
The DAZN pay-per-view begins at 2 p.m. ET with ring walks for the main event expected around 6 p.m. ET. The card costs $79.99 in the United States or is included with a DAZN Ultimate subscription.
The undercard features Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) challenging Nikita Zon for the WBA super middleweight title, plus Rafael Espinoza defending his WBO featherweight belt against late replacement Ricardo Blandon. The Lindolfo Delgado vs. Arthur Biyarslanov IBF super lightweight title fight is reportedly off the card, per reporter Lance Pugmire.
Canelo going to Riyadh at 36, coming off a loss, to fight an undefeated champion on his turf. That is not a safe play, and I respect it. Mbilli has power, he is young, and the draw with Martinez should not fool anybody into thinking he is an easy mark.
The question for Canelo is whether the layoff hurt him or helped him. Thirteen months is a long time for a fighter his age, and Crawford exposed things you cannot un-expose. If the blueprint against Mbilli is playing it smart, as Canelo himself admitted, he better play it smarter than he did against Bud.
I think Canelo wins a decision. His ring IQ is still elite, and Riyadh cards have treated him well. But if Mbilli catches him early, this could be the fight where the sport officially moves past Canelo Alvarez. Saturday night is going to be electric.
