Dana White Adds Mystery 50K Bonus to UFC 331 With No Criteria
The UFC president will hand-pick the winner of a $50,000 Proper Chaos bonus at UFC 331 based entirely on his own judgment.
Dana White is adding a $50,000 bonus to Saturday's UFC 331 card, and the only criteria is whatever he feels like.
White announced the "Proper Chaos" bonus ahead of the event at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, per Sherdog. Every fighter on the card is eligible, and White will personally decide the winner with no established guidelines.
"At UFC 331, we are unlocking the proper chaos bonus," White said, per Sherdog. "$50,000 awarded to the fighter who I think deserves it most."
The bonus is a promotional partnership with Paramount+'s "MobLand" series, making it a one-time offer specific to this card. It sits on top of the UFC's standard bonus structure, which includes $25,000 finishing bonuses and $100,000 Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night awards.
The lack of defined criteria is the unusual part. Standard UFC bonuses reward finishes and exciting fights. The Proper Chaos bonus rewards whatever White decides it rewards, which could mean the best knockout, the wildest moment, or something nobody sees coming.
UFC 331 features a flyweight title rematch between champion Joshua Van and former titleholder Alexandre Pantoja in the main event. The co-main event pits Arman Tsarukyan against Mauricio Ruffy in a lightweight bout with potential title implications.
Whether the vague criteria motivates fighters to take bigger risks or simply gives White another viral moment at the post-fight press conference remains to be seen. Either way, somebody is walking out of Crypto.com Arena $50,000 richer tonight based on one man's opinion.
A $50,000 bonus with no criteria other than Dana's mood is either the dumbest or the smartest thing the UFC has done this year, and I think it is the smartest. Fighters already chase the $100,000 bonuses. Adding a mystery check on top that goes to whoever makes the boss happiest is going to make somebody do something reckless tonight, and reckless is what sells.
The MobLand sponsorship angle is the tell. This is a marketing stunt with a Paramount logo on it, and that is fine. Dana has always run the bonus system on vibes anyway. Making it official just removes the pretense.
What I want to see is who actually gets it. My guess is it does not go to the most technical performance, it goes to the wildest moment, because that is what Dana means by proper chaos. Somebody on this card is walking out $50,000 richer for doing something dumb and glorious, and I cannot wait to see who.
