Dana White's Contender Series Week 7 delivered one of the year's most violent nights, headlined by a lightweight war between Piero Guaylupo and Callum Connor that nearly rewrote the UFC record books.

The pair combined for approximately 400 significant strikes across three rounds in a fight White called "one of the greatest fights you'll ever see" and a potential Fight of the Year contender. Their output would have set a three-round UFC lightweight record had the bout taken place on a standard UFC card rather than the Contender Series, per Sherdog.

Guaylupo took the unanimous decision with 30-27 scores across all three cards, but the story was the carnage. Connor was dropped late in the first round but kept firing. Both fighters were hospitalized after the bout. Connor received his contract announcement while getting medical treatment.

"A fight of that level needs two people, and both had earned a deal," White said, awarding UFC contracts to both men. Connor and welterweight Jaden Ortega became the first pair of losing fighters to earn contracts on the same Contender Series night.

Elsewhere on the card, flyweight Marcos Degli earned his deal with a spectacular standing one-arm rear-naked choke finish of Paris Moran, extending his winning streak to 13. KSW standout Damian Piwowarczyk punched his ticket with a first-round TKO at light heavyweight. Welterweight Alvi Dasuyev kept his perfect 10-0 record intact with a decision over Ortega, who also got signed despite the loss.

The lone rejection was Norbert Novenyi Jr., who won his lightweight main event by decision but failed to impress White. "I didn't see anything tonight that makes me say, 'I got to have this guy in the UFC,'" White said.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

Guaylupo and Connor gave us a Fight of the Year contender on a Tuesday, and Dana did the right thing by signing both. Four hundred significant strikes over three rounds, both guys in the hospital, Connor getting his contract while hooked up to medical equipment. That is the Contender Series at its absolute best.

I am a little torn on the two-loser precedent, though. Connor earned it. Jaden Ortega losing a decision to a 10-0 guy and still getting a deal feels more like Dana being in a good mood than a real evaluation. Handing out contracts to losers on the same night is going to make every future decision loser feel robbed when they do not get one.

And poor Norbert Novenyi Jr. wins the main event and goes home with nothing. That is the Contender Series lesson every prospect should tattoo somewhere: winning is not enough. You have to make Dana want you.
