Brandon Figueroa's disastrous fight week reached its breaking point on Saturday when his bout against Tomoki Kameda for the vacant WBA featherweight title was cancelled after Figueroa fell ill following his weight cut.

Figueroa had already been stripped of the WBA featherweight title on Friday after weighing in at 127.4 pounds, 1.4 pounds over the 126-pound limit. The belt he won from Nick Ball in February was vacated, and the revised plan was for Kameda to fight for the vacant title. That plan collapsed when Figueroa became sick overnight.

"Per source, tonight's Figueroa vs. Kameda fight has been canceled after Figueroa became ill Friday night," reporter Dan Rafael posted on X. Figueroa also disclosed a hamstring injury to reporter Chris Mannix, though Boxing News 24 notes the injury should not automatically be treated as the cause of the illness.

The cancellation leaves Kameda in a brutal position. He had made weight and completed his entire camp only to see his title opportunity disappear through no fault of his own. Kameda voiced his frustration on Friday, per Boxing News 24. Whether he will receive compensation or another crack at the vacant belt remains unclear. The WBA now has to sort out the next steps for the featherweight title.

The fight had been scheduled on the Sebastian Fundora vs. Ermal Hadribeaj card in Las Vegas. Figueroa leaves the weekend without a belt, without a fight, and with no clear timeline for his return to the ring.

This is as bad as a fight week can get. You miss weight, lose your belt, and then cannot even fight. I feel for Kameda here. The guy did everything right, made weight, trained his ass off for a title shot, and got left standing at the altar because someone else's body failed.

The weight cutting conversation in boxing keeps getting louder, and this is exactly why. Figueroa came in 1.4 pounds over, got stripped, and then his body shut down overnight. Those two things are almost certainly connected. When you push your body to the edge trying to make a weight class you probably should not be in, this is what happens.

The WBA needs to sort this out fast. Kameda deserves his title shot, whether that means facing another opponent for the vacant belt or getting priority in the next mandatory situation. Making him wait in line after he held up his end of the deal would be a joke.
