Justin Gaethje Not Sure He Will Fight Again as Lightweight Title Defense Looms
The UFC lightweight champion says he does not need to fight again despite Arman Tsarukyan waiting.

Justin Gaethje holds the UFC lightweight championship, but he is not sure he wants to defend it. The 37-year-old told reporters he may be done fighting, saying plainly: "I do not need to."
Gaethje is three months removed from his undisputed title victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 in June. He won the interim belt by beating Paddy Pimblett in January before unifying against Topuria. His body is paying the price. Per Sherdog, Gaethje is dealing with a deep knee bruise and hand injuries that prevent him from punching.
"It is not that I do not want to fight Arman. It really is not," Gaethje said per Sherdog. "I am just going to enjoy being the champion for the rest of the year." He described the decision as both a "business decision and a life decision."
Arman Tsarukyan, who holds a 24-3 record and recently knocked out Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331, is the clear next challenger. The UFC has reportedly confirmed a title fight between the two, but Gaethje has not committed to a timeline.
Gaethje has always been transparent about the toll fighting takes. With 40 professional and amateur bouts spanning nearly two decades and a style that invites damage, his caution makes sense. "I want to keep my faculties," he said. At 37, with a belt and his health, walking away would not be the worst call he ever made.
I respect the honesty here more than most people will. Gaethje is not playing games or trying to leverage a bigger payday. He is a guy who has been in wars his entire career, and he is telling you straight up that his body is breaking down and he is not sure the next fight is worth it.
That said, Arman Tsarukyan deserves his shot. The dude just starched Ruffy and the UFC already confirmed the fight. If Gaethje sits on the belt for six months and then retires, that is a problem for the division. The lightweight title cannot be a retirement gift.
My read: Gaethje fights Tsarukyan in early 2027 and that is his last fight regardless of the result. He is too competitive to walk away without defending, but too smart to stick around longer than he should. The man earned the right to go out on his own terms.
