Naoya Inoue is not hiding it anymore. The undisputed super bantamweight champion confirmed he is preparing with Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez in mind, the clearest signal yet that boxing's most anticipated pound-for-pound collision is moving toward reality.

"Yes, I'm preparing with Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez in mind," Inoue told Source of Boxing. The statement stops short of a fight announcement, but there is no ambiguity in the intent. Inoue is training for the man most of the boxing world considers his biggest remaining challenge at 122 pounds.

Inoue has unified all four belts at super bantamweight and is running out of opponents who can generate real interest at the weight. Rodriguez, who campaigns at 118 pounds as one of the most explosive fighters in boxing, represents the kind of legacy fight that defines a career. A bout would take place at Inoue's 122-pound weight, per Boxing News 24.

The timeline has a built-in deadline. Inoue's agent previously set March 2027 as the cutoff for making the Rodriguez fight happen. If negotiations stall past that point, Inoue has signaled he would move up to featherweight rather than wait.

For Rodriguez, the opportunity is massive. A win over Inoue at 122 would vault him into the conversation as the best fighter in boxing regardless of weight class. For Inoue, it is a chance to cement a resume that already includes knockouts in four different weight classes.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

This is the fight. Forget every other matchup in boxing right now. Inoue vs. Bam Rodriguez at 122 is the best fight that can be made in the sport, and Inoue just told us he is preparing for it. That is not idle talk from a guy who has destroyed everyone put in front of him.

I have been saying for a while that Rodriguez is the only fighter in the lower weight classes who has the tools to genuinely trouble Inoue. He is fast, he hits like a middleweight relative to his size, and he has the kind of confidence that does not crack under pressure. But 122 is Inoue's kingdom, and asking Bam to move up four pounds to fight the most destructive puncher pound-for-pound in boxing is asking a lot.

The March 2027 deadline matters. If this fight does not happen by then, Inoue moves to featherweight and the window closes. Both sides need to make this happen while it still means everything.
