Natalia Silva is the new UFC women's flyweight champion. The Brazilian striker outpointed Wang Cong across five rounds at UFC 332 on Saturday night at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, taking the vacant title by unanimous decision with scorecards of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46.

The belt had been stripped from Valentina Shevchenko due to injury, and Silva made the most of the opportunity. She used her speed and movement to keep Wang guessing for the first three rounds, mixing low kicks with sharp combinations at range. Silva dropped Wang in the early going and piled up scoring sequences that kept at least two of the three judges in her corner on every card.

Wang Cong made a hard push in the championship rounds, pressing forward and landing heavy leather that closed the gap on the scorecards. But Silva had already built too big a lead, and her footwork kept her out of trouble when it mattered most. The final bell confirmed what most of the cage-side media had scored: a clear Silva victory.

With the win, Silva (21-5-1) becomes the fourth champion in the history of the UFC women's flyweight division. Wang (10-2) drops her first loss inside the octagon after an unbeaten UFC start. Shevchenko has already signaled she intends to reclaim the belt when healthy.

Silva called the title "a lifelong dream" in her post-fight interview. She now sits atop a division in transition, with former champion Shevchenko and several contenders circling for the first crack at the new queen.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I had Silva winning this fight before it started, and she delivered exactly what I expected. Speed kills at 125. Wang Cong is a legitimate problem for everybody else in that division, but Silva's movement was a full gear ahead all night. The scorecards were right, though 49-46 was generous. This was a clear win, not a blowout.

The real story is what comes next. Shevchenko is already talking about coming back, and honestly, that fight scares me for Silva. Valentina's pressure and clinch work are a different animal than anything Wang brought. Silva needs a defense or two under her belt before that happens. Give her Manon Fiorot or Erin Blanchfield first. Let her settle into the championship rounds with that belt on her waist before you throw the greatest women's flyweight of all time at her.
