Sean O'Malley has a blunt message for anyone dreaming of getting rich in the UFC: don't bother.

The former bantamweight champion weighed in on the fighter pay debate that has dominated MMA headlines in 2026, with multiple high-profile bouts stalling over money. O'Malley's take was characteristically unfiltered.

"These young fighters coming up, we know you're not gonna make that much money, so don't go try to be in the UFC," O'Malley said. "If your goal is to be in the UFC and become the richest person, it's not gonna happen."

O'Malley acknowledged the frustration fighters feel when their compensation doesn't match their value, but argued the reality should be accepted up front. "Don't even try to become a professional fighter if you're gonna end up complaining about money," he said. "It does suck when you're in a position where you feel like you're worth more, but that's just what it is."

Still, O'Malley credited the UFC with transforming his life. "The UFC completely changed my life. I would not be where I'm at. I would never have made this much money doing something else," he said. "I'm forever grateful for the UFC."

But even gratitude has limits. O'Malley admitted there comes a breaking point: "There comes a time where it's like, I do wanna fight, and this is the next guy, but I don't wanna fight for that amount of money."

The comments land at a moment when the UFC's pay structure is under more scrutiny than ever, per MMA Mania. Multiple contenders have turned down fights over purse disputes this year, and O'Malley himself has been described as underpaid relative to his drawing power.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I respect Suga for being honest, but this is a weird spot to plant your flag. You can be grateful and still admit the system is broken. The UFC made O'Malley rich, sure, but O'Malley made the UFC a lot of money too. That's not charity, that's business.

The "don't complain" line sounds tough until you realize it's the same argument the promotion uses to avoid paying guys more. Telling the next generation to just accept bad money because that's how it's always been is how you keep it that way forever.

I get it. O'Malley's not a union organizer, he's a fighter trying to stay in the company's good graces. But the guys making $12K to show and $12K to win at the bottom of a Fight Night card aren't complaining because they're entitled. They're complaining because they can't pay rent. There's a difference between gratitude and silence.
