Raul Rosas Jr. extended his winning streak to six fights Saturday night at UFC Vegas 121, stopping Raoni Barcelos via fifth-round knockout in a main event that will be remembered as much for its horror as its action.

The 21-year-old Rosas Jr. and the 39-year-old Barcelos went to war for four rounds inside the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Barcelos, the veteran, was ahead on all three scorecards heading into the fifth. He nearly finished Rosas Jr. in the fourth round with a rear-naked choke attempt locked in with a body triangle, but the younger fighter survived.

Rosas Jr. caught a second wind in the fifth. At 1:38 of the round, he landed an inside trip that sent Barcelos crashing to the canvas. What happened next stopped the building cold. Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness on impact, his head striking the fence during the takedown. The referee waved it off immediately. Replays could not clearly identify what caused the sudden loss of consciousness, with observers calling it a "phantom strike."

Barceloslay motionless on the mat. Ringside doctors checked his pulse multiple times as he made sounds but remained unresponsive. He was stretchered out of the arena and transported to a Las Vegas hospital.

The good news came shortly after. MMA journalist Ariel Helwani reported that Barcelos was conscious, able to speak, and could move his fingers and toes. His coach Davi Ramos confirmed: "Raoni is doing well, everything is okay so everyone can relax. He just went to get a CT scan, but everything is fine."

Rosas Jr., visibly shaken, asked fans to pray for his opponent. Both fighters earned Fight of the Night bonuses worth $100,000 each, per the UFC. Rosas Jr. improved to 13-1 overall (7-1 UFC) and continues chasing his goal of becoming the youngest champion in UFC history.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I have watched a lot of fights in this town. I have never seen anything like the end of Rosas vs. Barcelos. Barcelos was winning this fight. He had Rosas Jr. in deep trouble in the fourth round. The kid survived, came back, hit a trip, and somehow the veteran just went out like someone flipped a switch. No clean shot on the replay, no obvious cause. Just a man lying on the canvas not moving while 5,000 people held their breath.

The stretcher coming out is the image that sticks. Rosas Jr. asking people to pray is the sound that sticks. This sport can be beautiful and terrifying in the same round, and tonight it was both.

Barcelos is awake, talking, moving. That is the only result that matters right now. As for Rosas Jr., the kid is 21, on a six-fight tear, and just headlined his first card. He is going to be a problem at 135 for a long time. But tonight, the celebration can wait.
