Tim Kennedy Congo Ambush Linked to Mining Revenue Operation
New reports tie the September attack that wounded the former UFC fighter to a mining-related security mission.
New details have emerged about the September ambush in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that left former UFC middleweight Tim Kennedy wounded and one of his team members dead.
Kennedy was part of a three-man contractor team working for Vectus Global, a private security company led by Blackwater founder Erik Prince, per Sherdog and Reuters. The team also included former New Zealand Special Air Service member Justin Conaglen and an unidentified third contractor.
The ambush took place on September 17 in South Kivu province. About 20 people were killed or wounded, according to sources cited by Reuters. Conaglen was killed in the attack. Kennedy sustained three gunshot wounds to a leg. The third contractor was also wounded. At least seven Congolese nationals were among the dead, with a Congolese security source telling Reuters that villagers were likely among the casualties.
Sources close to the Congolese government told MMA Weekly that the contractors were assigned to a ground-clearing operation. That work was linked to broader efforts to protect mining revenue, combat smuggling, and collect taxes for the government, per the report.
The attackers' identities and the precise circumstances of the ambush have not been officially confirmed. A Vectus Global representative declined to comment to Reuters.
Kennedy is a former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight and a decorated Army Special Forces veteran. His condition following the shooting has not been publicly updated.
This story keeps getting darker. When it first broke that Tim Kennedy had been shot in the Congo, details were scarce. Now we are learning the operation was tied to mining revenue and government tax collection, and the security firm was run by Erik Prince, the Blackwater founder.
I have got nothing but respect for Kennedy's military service. The man is a genuine Special Forces operator, not some weekend warrior playing soldier. But the specifics of this operation raise serious questions. Twenty people dead or wounded, villagers among the casualties, and a security company that will not comment.
MMA fighters have taken all kinds of post-career paths. Coaching, broadcasting, politics. This is something different entirely. Kennedy was running private security operations in one of the most dangerous regions on earth, and a fellow operator died right next to him.
I hope he makes a full recovery, and I hope the full story comes out. Because right now, the details paint a complicated picture.
