UFC Cuts Ismael Bonfim After Third Career Weight Miss and First-Round KO Loss
Bonfim missed weight by 7.5 pounds at UFC Vegas 122 before getting knocked out by Francisco Prado in the first round.

The UFC has officially removed Ismael Bonfim from its roster following a dismal outing at UFC Vegas 122, per Sherdog.
Bonfim missed the non-title lightweight limit by 7.5 pounds for his fight against Francisco Prado, forfeiting 25 percent of his purse. He then lost by first-round technical knockout, marking his fourth straight finish loss in the promotion.
It was the third weight miss of Bonfim's UFC tenure. He came in 3.5 pounds over for a 2023 bout against Vinc Pichel that was canceled entirely, then missed by five pounds against Chris Padilla in 2025 before losing by knockout in that fight as well. The misses got worse each time.
Bonfim, 30, signed with the UFC through Dana White's Contender Series in 2022 and debuted with a spectacular flying knee knockout of Terrance McKinney. That highlight-reel moment was the high point. He went 1-5 after the debut and finished his promotional run at 2-5.
Before the cut was announced, Bonfim posted on Instagram acknowledging the result. "Defeat will never be able to erase the entire history we have built," he wrote. "My story doesn't end here."
The release continues the roster turnover from UFC Vegas 122, which also saw longtime veterans Gerald Meerschaert and Niko Price retire. The UFC has been aggressive about trimming fighters who cannot consistently make weight, and three misses in four years made Bonfim's departure a matter of when, not if.
I don't enjoy piling on a guy who just lost his job, but Bonfim's UFC run was a cautionary tale. You get one of the best debut knockouts in Contender Series history, and then you go 1-5 with three weight misses. That's how you squander an opportunity.
Missing weight by 7.5 pounds at lightweight isn't a bad cut. It's not even trying. And this wasn't his first time. At some point the UFC has to protect the integrity of the weight classes, and Bonfim forced their hand.
The talent was always there. You don't flatline Terrance McKinney with a flying knee if you can't fight. But talent without discipline is just potential, and potential has an expiration date in this sport. Bonfim's Instagram post was classy, and I hope he figures out the weight situation and lands somewhere. But the UFC was right to move on.
