Valentina Shevchenko did not simply choose to walk away from her flyweight title. According to a report from Heavy, the UFC pressured the longtime champion into vacating because the promotion needed a title fight to headline UFC 332.

Shevchenko, who last fought in November, was scheduled to defend against Natalia Silva at UFC 332 before an injury sidelined her for roughly a year. Rather than let Shevchenko hold the belt during recovery, the UFC preferred a vacant title fight over booking an interim championship, per Heavy. Silva ended up fighting Wang Cong for the undisputed belt and won it.

The move raised eyebrows. Other UFC champions have sat out longer stretches without being asked to give up their titles. Shevchenko defended her belt nine times across two title reigns and is widely regarded as one of the greatest female fighters in MMA history. Being nudged out while injured stung, and Shevchenko made her intentions clear on social media after Silva's win, posting: "Keep it warm, I'm coming soon for my belt."

Oddsmakers believe her. BetOnline has already posted early lines for a potential Silva vs. Shevchenko showdown, and the new champion opened as the underdog. Silva sits at +165 while Shevchenko is favored at -190, per Sherdog. No date or venue has been announced for the rematch.

Shevchenko's resume makes the line reasonable, but Silva just stopped Wang Cong to claim undisputed gold and has looked dangerous at 125 pounds. This is shaping up to be one of the biggest women's MMA fights of 2027.

The UFC wanted a title fight for UFC 332 and Shevchenko was in the way. That is what this comes down to. I get the business side. You cannot headline a pay-per-view with an interim title when you can just make the real thing. But Shevchenko defended that belt nine times. She earned the right to heal without being stripped.

What makes this even more interesting is where the money is going. Oddsmakers have Shevchenko at -190 to come back and take the title from Silva. That is not a small line for a fighter coming off a year-long layoff against a champion who just won the belt convincingly. The market is telling you what everyone already knows: Bullet is still the best flyweight in the world, belt or no belt.

I think she comes back and wins it. Silva is good, really good, but Shevchenko in a five-round title fight is a different animal. If you can get Silva at +165 you are getting value, but my money is on the veteran.
