Volkanovski's Stunned Reaction to Ruffy KO Goes Viral After UFC 331
Alexander Volkanovski was visibly distraught in Ruffy's corner as Tsarukyan delivered the fight-ending elbows at UFC 331.
The knockout was brutal. The corner reaction might have been worse. Alexander Volkanovski's stunned reaction to watching his fighter Mauricio Ruffy get knocked out by Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 331 has gone viral, per Sherdog.
Cameras captured Volkanovski and former UFC lightweight Brad Riddell looking clearly stunned as Tsarukyan landed the fight-ending elbows at 4:56 of the first round. The footage spread rapidly across social media, with fans noting how the former featherweight champion appeared visibly distraught at cageside.
Volkanovski has been coaching Ruffy since the Brazilian switched camps following his loss to Benoit St. Denis last year. Ruffy left the Brazilian gym Fighting Nerds and relocated to Australia to train under Volkanovski, making the coaching relationship relatively new but clearly deep.
The loss was Ruffy's second in the UFC and a significant blow to his championship aspirations. While Ruffy showed improved takedown defense during the fight, a sign of Volkanovski's grappling-focused training approach, the first-round knockout overshadowed any technical progress.
For Volkanovski, the transition from elite fighter to coach has involved both highs and lows. Training alongside his fighters rather than competing gives him a different relationship with the outcomes, and Saturday's finish clearly hit hard.
The moment also underscored just how devastating Tsarukyan's finish was. The elbow that ended it came at the buzzer, meaning Ruffy was seconds away from making it to the second round. Instead, Volkanovski watched his fighter crumple to the canvas in real time.
That clip of Volk and Brad Riddell at cageside told you everything about how much that loss hurt. Ruffy moved across the world to train with him, they had clearly fixed the takedown defense, and then an elbow at 4:56 of the first round wiped it all out. Four seconds from the bell. Brutal.
I actually think Volkanovski deserves credit here, not sympathy. Ruffy's takedown defense looked better, which was the whole reason he left Fighting Nerds for Australia. The process was working. Tsarukyan is just a bad matchup for anybody right now, and a buzzer-beating elbow is not a coaching failure.
What I hope is that Volk does not take it too hard. Coaching is different from fighting because you cannot do anything about it once the door shuts. He will learn that. Ruffy is two losses deep in the UFC now, and the next fight has to be a smart booking, not a statement one. Rebuild first.
