Raoni Barcelos Suffered Brain Swelling After UFC Vegas 121 Loss to Rosas
Glover Teixeira revealed Raoni Barcelos suffered a traumatic brain injury with swelling after collapsing against Raul Rosas Jr.
Raoni Barcelos suffered a traumatic brain injury with brain swelling following his loss to Raul Rosas Jr. at UFC Vegas 121 on September 26, according to his coach Glover Teixeira.
Barcelos was ahead on the scorecards in the fifth round of their bantamweight main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas when he suddenly went limp during a wrestling exchange and lost consciousness. Referee intervention gave Rosas Jr. the technical knockout win in a fight Barcelos was on track to win.
Barcelos was transported to a Level 1 trauma center. Medical staff ran neurological tests because the loss of consciousness was unusual for a standard knockout. Testing revealed brain swelling consistent with a traumatic brain injury.
Teixeira, the former UFC light heavyweight champion who works as Barcelos' cornerman, shared the details publicly. He theorized that exhaustion played a role, with the body shutting down despite Barcelos' determination to continue. "His mind was stronger than his body," Teixeira said. "He didn't want to give up."
Teixeira added that the swelling may have caused the blackout: "There was some swelling in his brain, so it was a traumatic brain injury and maybe that swelling caused him to black out." No timeline for Barcelos' return has been announced.
This one's hard to read. A fighter winning on the scorecards in the championship rounds, and his body just shuts off. That's not a knockdown. That's not getting caught. That's your brain telling you it's done while you're still trying to fight.
The scariest part is Barcelos had no idea it was coming. He was winning. Teixeira is right that the mind was ahead of the body, and that gap is where the danger lives in this sport.
I hope Barcelos takes all the time he needs. No fight is worth pushing through something like this. The UFC's medical protocols caught it, got him to a trauma center, and that's the system working the way it should. But brain swelling is as serious as it gets. Prayers up for a full recovery.
