David Benavidez is no longer the WBA Regular light heavyweight champion. The sanctioning body removed him from its 175-pound listings after requesting he clarify which division he intended to focus on, per Boxing News 24.

The WBA Championship Committee said it asked Benavidez to choose, and the answer was cruiserweight. Benavidez won the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles by defeating Gilberto Ramirez in May 2026 and has made clear he plans to stay at that weight class, where unification fights are the priority.

Benavidez still holds the WBC light heavyweight belt, so the loss of the WBA strap does not leave him entirely without leverage at 175. But his focus is upstairs. A scheduled bout with Michal Cieslak and a potential showdown with IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia are the fights on his radar.

The move benefits Albert Ramirez, the current interim WBA light heavyweight champion. His promoter expects formal elevation to full champion status, though that has not been officially confirmed by the WBA.

Benavidez collected titles across two weight classes in 2026 but holding them all was never sustainable. The WBA forced the issue, and Benavidez picked the division where the bigger fights live.

This was always going to happen. You can't hold belts in two weight classes and pretend you're going to defend both. The WBA called the bluff and Benavidez made the right call picking cruiserweight. That's where the legacy fights are.

The real story here is what Benavidez has done in 2026. He went up to cruiserweight, beat Ramirez for two belts, and now he's chasing Opetaia for the IBF title. If he gets that fight and wins it, he's the undisputed cruiserweight champion. That's a Hall of Fame resume line.

I do wonder if the WBC lets him keep their light heavyweight belt much longer either. At some point you have to show up and defend it or move on. But right now Benavidez is playing the game right: pick one division, stack the biggest names, and let the alphabet soup sort itself out.
