Ryan Garcia has two paths in front of him, and one of them leads to Madison Square Garden.

Per Boxing News 24, representatives for Garcia and Teofimo Lopez have been in active discussions about a fight on February 6, 2027, at MSG in New York City. ESPN's Chris Mannix confirmed that conversations have advanced to include specific dates and locations, saying there have been "conversations between the representatives of Garcia and Lopez about making a Garcia versus Lopez fight."

The complication is Lopez's WBA mandatory obligation against Jack Catterall. The sanctioning body would need to either enforce that requirement or grant Lopez a waiver to bypass it for the Garcia fight. How the WBA handles that situation could determine whether this superfight materializes on schedule.

Garcia's alternative is a December date against Isaac Cruz, who called him out after stopping Nestor Bravo in six rounds to defend his WBC interim super lightweight title this past Saturday. Cruz made it clear he is ready whenever. "Here I am for the challenge, and I am more than ready," Cruz said. "Whether that be December, May, or September, I don't care about the date."

The Cruz fight would keep Garcia active while Lopez sorts out his mandatory, but it also carries real risk. Garcia reportedly rehydrates well above the super lightweight limit on fight night, which would give Cruz a significant size disadvantage but not necessarily a skill one.

February at the Garden against Lopez is the bigger fight and the bigger payday. Whether the politics of sanctioning bodies let it happen on time is the only question left.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

Garcia against Lopez at the Garden in February is the fight, and everybody involved knows it. Two big names, two belts, New York in the winter. The only thing standing in the way is a WBA mandatory, and we all know how those tend to get solved when the money is this big. Waiver or step-aside, the sanctioning body will find a way.

The Isaac Cruz option is the one that intrigues me as a fan and scares me as a Garcia backer. Cruz just stopped Bravo, said he does not care about the date, and he is exactly the kind of short, relentless pressure fighter who does not care how much bigger you are on fight night. Garcia rehydrating well over the limit helps, but Cruz has been the smaller man his whole career.

If I am Garcia's team, I do not take Cruz in December with a Lopez payday sitting in February. Too much risk for too little reward. Stay sharp, wait on the WBA, and go to the Garden.
