Filip Hrgovic Faces March Deadline to Defend IBF Heavyweight Title Against Frank Sanchez
The IBF has set a March 1 deadline for Hrgovic to face mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez.

Filip Hrgovic is on the clock. The IBF has given the heavyweight champion until March 1, 2027, to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez. The sanctioning body typically sends formal notification 60 days before the deadline, which means the order could land by late December.
Hrgovic, who last defended against Moses Itauma in August, is exploring a voluntary defense against kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven before taking on Sanchez. That timeline is getting tight. Any voluntary fight would need to happen soon enough to allow a full camp and recovery before the March deadline.
Sanchez is not interested in stepping aside again, per Boxing News 24. He previously accepted money to let the Itauma fight happen, but he wants the title shot this time.
The matchup presents a real stylistic test. Sanchez is a slick mover and counterpuncher, the kind of opponent who forces Hrgovic to cut off the ring rather than walk forward and trade. Preparing for Verhoeven and then pivoting to a completely different style on a compressed schedule is a risk.
Verhoeven would need IBF approval as a title challenger, and that is not guaranteed given his background is in kickboxing rather than professional boxing. The clock is ticking on both fronts.
Hrgovic wants to squeeze in a Verhoeven payday before the mandatory and I get why. Verhoeven is a name, it sells in Europe, and it is a more winnable fight than Sanchez. But the math does not work.
You cannot take a voluntary in December or January and then turn around for a full camp against Sanchez by March 1. Not at heavyweight. Not against a guy who moves like Sanchez. If Hrgovic gets marked up or picks up even a minor injury against Verhoeven, the mandatory falls apart and the IBF strips him.
Just fight Sanchez. He is the hardest available matchup at heavyweight right now anyway. Beat him and the voluntary paydays will still be there after. Try to skip the line and you risk losing the belt to a sanctioning body instead of a fighter.
