Jermall Charlo wants Jaime Munguia in Houston, and he is not being shy about it.

The 36-year-old former middleweight champion is eyeing a super middleweight showdown with Munguia as he chases a third divisional world title. Charlo told Boxing News 24 that the fight is the one that makes the most sense for his career right now.

"The fight with Munguia makes the most sense," Charlo said. "I'd love to fight him right here in Houston."

Charlo has been fighting sporadically in recent years. He competed only three times since 2021 and returned from a 17-month layoff to face Thomas LaManna in May 2025. The question at this stage of his career is whether Charlo still has the tools to compete at the championship level or if the extended time away has dulled his edge.

Munguia would provide an immediate answer. The Mexican puncher fights behind relentless volume and heavy combinations, a style that leaves little room for ring rust. A fight between the two would test whether Charlo's comeback is legitimate or merely nostalgic.

Negotiations have not yet begun, per the report. Charlo also floated the possibility of appearing on a Canelo Alvarez card in Mexico as an alternative path to a big-name fight.

A Houston date would give Charlo a homecoming atmosphere, though the 168-pound division has no shortage of contenders looking for opportunities of their own.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

Charlo at 36 calling for Munguia is either incredibly brave or incredibly stubborn, and with Charlo it has always been a little bit of both. I respect the ambition of chasing a title in a third division, but three fights since 2021 is not a resume that screams "ready for Munguia."

Here is the thing though. Charlo in Houston is a real draw. The man has a fanbase there that shows up and shows out. If he can actually get Munguia to agree, this fight fills an arena and generates real buzz for a super middleweight division that could use it.

My concern is simple. Munguia's pressure and volume versus a guy who has been on the shelf more than he has been in the ring. Charlo's power transfers to 168, no question, but can his legs and lungs keep up after all the inactivity? I have my doubts. I would love to be wrong. Houston deserves a big night.
