Former Champ Liam Smith Charged With GBH After Alleged Manchester Attack
Smith, 38, has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and is due at Manchester Crown Court in October.

Former WBO light-middleweight champion Liam Smith has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged attack on a night concierge at a Manchester apartment building, per Boxing News 24.
The alleged incident took place on September 13 at The Blade, an apartment complex on Silvercroft Street in the Deansgate area of Manchester. The victim, a night concierge at the building, reportedly suffered serious facial injuries including fractures that required surgery.
Smith, 38, was charged under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, one of the most serious assault charges in English law. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court on September 14 and was released on bail. His next court date is October 19 at Manchester Crown Court, where he is expected to enter a plea.
Smith has not been convicted, and no plea or public response from his legal team has been reported.
The Liverpool native held the WBO 154-pound title from 2015 to 2016 and is best known in recent years for his two fights with Chris Eubank Jr. His career had stalled heading into 2026. He lost to Aaron McKenna by unanimous decision in April 2025, and a planned September 4 bout against Ilaru Kujala was called off due to injury.
Smith comes from one of British boxing's most prominent fighting families. His brothers Callum, Stephen, and Paul Smith have all competed at world level.
This is a bad one. Section 18 GBH with intent is not a bar scuffle charge. It is the kind of charge prosecutors bring when the injuries are severe and they believe there was deliberate intent to cause serious harm. Facial fractures requiring surgery on a night concierge. That is ugly no matter how you look at it.
Smith has not entered a plea and has not been convicted, so I will reserve judgment on the facts. But the timing could not be worse for a guy whose career was already on life support. A loss to Aaron McKenna, a cancelled fight, and now this. Whatever happens in court, the boxing career is almost certainly done.
The Smith family has given British boxing a lot over the years. Callum was a world champion, and the whole clan has been a staple of the Liverpool fight scene. This is not the kind of headline any of them want to see.
