Umar Nurmagomedov is done wrestling. At least that's what he told his manager. In an interview on Submission Radio, Ali Abdelaziz revealed that Nurmagomedov called him with a dramatic declaration following his knockout loss to Song Yadong at UFC Shanghai on August 29, per MMA Sucka.

"I'm not a wrestler. I'm never going to wrestle again," Nurmagomedov told Abdelaziz. "I'm just going to knock everybody out."

The statement is a striking departure for a fighter whose career was built on Dagestani wrestling dominance. Nurmagomedov, now 20-2, dominated the first round against Song with effective striking and wrestling combinations before walking into a perfectly timed uppercut in Round 2. Song caught him at 1:48 of the second round as Nurmagomedov changed levels, per Yahoo Sports. The punch landed flush on his jaw and ended the fight instantly.

It was the first knockout loss of Nurmagomedov's career and derailed what had been a clear path to a UFC bantamweight title shot.

Abdelaziz emphasized that the conviction was genuine. He said he felt the "vibration" in Nurmagomedov's voice and predicted 2027 would be the biggest year of his client's career, with a comeback "with a vengeance," per MMA Sucka. The manager also pointed out that both Umar and his brother Usman Nurmagomedov are strikers, not primarily wrestlers, despite the family name's association with grappling.

Whether the vow holds up under the pressure of a real fight camp remains to be seen. Fighters have historically made emotional declarations after devastating losses only to return to their strengths when the cage door closes. But if Nurmagomedov genuinely commits to a striking-first approach, the bantamweight division just got a lot more interesting.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I have heard this speech before. A great wrestler gets cracked, calls his manager, says he is never wrestling again, then reverts to his base the second a fight camp gets serious. Umar telling Ali Abdelaziz he is going to knock everybody out is the sound of a proud fighter processing his first knockout loss, not a game plan.

And honestly, I hope he does not follow through. Umar was winning that fight. He was mixing striking and wrestling beautifully in the first round, and then he changed levels into a perfectly timed uppercut. The lesson there is not that wrestling failed him. The lesson is that Song Yadong is a killer and Umar got sloppy on the entry.

If he really does show up in 2027 as a pure striker, the bantamweight division gets more fun and Umar gets more beatable. Keep the wrestling, fix the entries, and he is back in the title picture fast.
