Alexander Volkanovski Admits Nerves Ahead of UFC 333 Title Defense Against Movsar Evloev

The two-time featherweight champion says Evloev has him feeling something he rarely feels: nervous.

Alexander Volkanovski is not the type to admit weakness. The two-time UFC featherweight champion has fought through broken hands, altitude changes and back-to-back losses to Islam Makhachev without flinching. But ahead of his UFC 333 title defense against undefeated contender Movsar Evloev, Volkanovski is being unusually candid about how this fight sits with him.

"I don't get nervous, but I'll probably get a little nervous for this," Volkanovski told LowKick MMA. At 37, he knows the math is tightening. Evloev has never lost in the UFC and brings relentless wrestling pressure, the kind of style that forces even the best to work every second of every round.

Volkanovski says the training camp has been brutal. "The worst type of pain is fatigue," he said. "It's going to be tough, but you need to get through these rounds." He believes his path to victory runs through Evloev's cardio, banking on the Russian's pace slowing as the fight deepens.

The champion's game plan is clear: stay disciplined, limit damage and wait for Evloev to abandon his wrestling when it stops working. "My plans are to go out there and not take too much damage," Volkanovski said. He expects Evloev to start throwing desperate punches once the takedowns dry up, and that is where he plans to finish the fight.

"I got a standard I need to keep, even at 37. I still got a standard," Volkanovski said. For Evloev, who has called for a finish of his own, the message is simple: the belt is not changing hands without a war.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I love that Volk is being real about this one. He is not playing the unbeatable champion card. He knows Evloev is dangerous, and honestly, that is what makes this fight so interesting. Evloev has not lost. Period. That is rare air at 145 pounds, and Volk respects it.

But here is the thing: Volkanovski at 37 is still the most technically complete featherweight on the planet. The man fought Makhachev twice at lightweight and nearly won both. Evloev's wrestling is legit, but Volk has the defensive wrestling to neutralize it, and once that takedown threat fades, Evloev is going to be standing in front of a guy who hits harder and reads fighters better than anyone in the division.

I think Volk gets it done in the championship rounds. Evloev will have his moments early, but fatigue is the great equalizer, and nobody manages a five-round fight better than Alexander Volkanovski.
