Alexander Volkanovski is not just confident heading into his UFC 333 title defense against Movsar Evloev. He thinks the matchup plays directly into his hands.

The 38-year-old two-time featherweight champion broke down the fight in a sit-down with Megan Olivi, calling Evloev a "worthy opponent" who deserves the title shot and should have gotten one sooner. But respect aside, Volkanovski believes Evloev's strengths become weaknesses against him specifically, per LowKick MMA.

Volkanovski expects Evloev to lean on his wrestling and grappling, the tools that carried him to an undefeated record. The champion is not worried.

"I truly do believe I can put him out," Volkanovski said, predicting a finish before the fifth round and possibly earlier.

Volkanovski acknowledged that Evloev is the best fighter in the division outside of himself and more well-rounded than most opponents he has faced. But he believes no one can outwork him over 25 minutes, and Evloev's usual path to victory will not hold up against his takedown defense and pace.

The champion said he is prepared to go the full five rounds if needed, but his confidence in getting the stoppage was clear throughout the interview. This is a different Volkanovski than the one who seemed content to cruise through decisions in his first title reign. He wants a statement.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

Volk calling for a finish is new. In his first run as champion he was happy to outpoint guys over five rounds and there's nothing wrong with that. But predicting he'll stop Evloev, a guy who has never been finished, tells me he's coming into this fight with a different energy.

He's right about the matchup, too. Evloev's wrestling is elite, but Volkanovski's takedown defense might be the best in the division's history. If Evloev can't get him down, he has to stand and trade, and that's where the champion lives.

I think Volk wins this. Probably a decision despite the finish talk. But at 38, every fight could be the one where father time shows up. If Evloev has a path to the belt, it runs through the first two rounds when he's freshest.
