WBA Orders Munguia to Defend Super Middleweight Title Against Melikuziev
The WBA mandated negotiations between champion Jaime Munguia and dangerous challenger Bektemir Melikuziev with an October 21 deadline.

The WBA has ordered super middleweight champion Jaime Munguia to negotiate a mandatory defense against Bektemir Melikuziev, giving both camps until October 21 to reach an agreement. Failure to comply sends the fight to a purse bid.
Munguia (46-2, 35 KOs) won the WBA title by defeating Jose Armando Resendiz on May 2, 2026. Per Boxing News 24, his first mandatory presents serious danger. Melikuziev (17-1, 11 KOs) is a 2016 Olympic silver medalist who fights from a southpaw stance and carries fight-changing power in his straight left hand.
The stylistic matchup favors the challenger in uncomfortable ways for Munguia's camp. ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez confirmed the order, and analysts have already flagged the Mexican champion's habitual defensive lapses: dropping his lead shoulder, flaring elbows, and leaving himself open to power shots. Those are precisely the openings Melikuziev's heavy hands are built to exploit.
Canelo Alvarez exposed similar defensive flaws when he dropped Munguia in their May 2024 fight. Melikuziev does not carry Canelo's resume, but his relentless body punching and power from the southpaw angle present a comparable threat to Munguia's chin.
The mandatory disrupts Golden Boy Promotions' plans for Munguia, as the team likely preferred voluntary defenses or more lucrative matchups. Instead, they face a dangerous puncher who has nothing to lose and everything to prove.
If negotiations stall past October 21, the WBA will schedule a purse bid to force the fight into existence.
This is the mandatory Golden Boy did not want, and I understand why. Melikuziev is a southpaw Olympic silver medalist with a straight left that ends nights, and Munguia's defense has the exact holes that punch is designed for. Lead shoulder drops, elbows flare, and the left goes straight through the door. Canelo showed everybody the map when he dropped him.
Do not mistake that for a Melikuziev pick. Munguia has 46 wins and 35 knockouts and a motor that has overwhelmed better technicians before. Melikuziev has been hurt before too. What I expect is a brawl where somebody hits the floor, and I lean Munguia on volume in a fight that is much closer than the resumes suggest.
The bigger story is that Munguia finally has a belt and immediately has to defend it against the most dangerous available guy instead of cashing in. That is how mandatories are supposed to work. The WBA got one right. Purse bid is October 21.
