WBC Orders Carlos Adames to Defend Middleweight Title Against Nursultanov
The WBC elevated Meiirim Nursultanov to a full title shot after Jesus Ramos Jr. was hospitalized and withdrew from their interim fight.

The WBC has ordered middleweight champion Carlos Adames to defend his title against mandatory challenger Meiirim Nursultanov, with a purse bid deadline of October 20 if the two camps cannot reach a deal.
Nursultanov was originally scheduled to face interim champion Jesus Ramos Jr. on a PBC card, with the winner set to challenge Adames. When Ramos withdrew due to hospitalization from food poisoning, the WBC skipped the interim step entirely and elevated Nursultanov directly to a full mandatory title shot, per Boxing News 24.
The order comes with a stipulation: the winner of Adames-Nursultanov must then face Ramos, preserving the interim champion's path to unification once he recovers.
Nursultanov, a Kazakh grinder with deep amateur seasoning, presents a physical challenge for any middleweight. He is known for punishing body work and the kind of relentless pressure that makes opponents earn every minute. Adames, who fought Hamzah Sheeraz to a controversial draw in Saudi Arabia in his last outing, brings awkward timing and genuine power but has struggled to generate mainstream commercial appeal.
The October 20 purse bid deadline gives both sides roughly a month to negotiate. If talks stall, the highest bidder among promoters wins hosting rights, a scenario that could land the fight on a PBC card given Adames' existing promotional ties.
For Adames, it is another mandatory defense in a division where the biggest names keep finding ways to avoid each other. For Nursultanov, it is a shortcut to the biggest fight of his career, courtesy of Ramos' bad luck with a hotel buffet.
Nursultanov got the luckiest promotion in boxing this year. He was supposed to fight Jesus Ramos Jr. for the interim belt, Ramos ends up hospitalized with food poisoning, and the WBC just hands the Kazakh a full mandatory shot at Adames. Good for him. Bad for Ramos, who now has to wait on the winner.
As a fight, I actually like it. Nursultanov is a grinder with body work that wears people down, and Adames is awkward with real power but looked shaky in that draw with Sheeraz. That is a style clash where the pressure fighter can make the champion uncomfortable for twelve rounds. I would not be surprised to see a close, ugly decision.
The bigger picture is the usual middleweight story. The big names keep avoiding each other and the champion keeps taking mandatories nobody asked for. Purse bid is October 20. Watch PBC land it.
