Arnold Barboza Jr. says a welterweight title opportunity has landed in his lap on short notice, and it could happen within weeks.

Barboza took to social media to share the news, confirming the bout would be at 147 pounds for a belt, per Boxing News 24. "I got some news today. It's a blessing. I don't know how real it is," Barboza said. "A lot sooner than expected. Not no next year fight. A couple of weeks soon."

Barboza did not name his opponent, but speculation immediately pointed to Devin Haney. Haney's expected showdown with Shakur Stevenson fell apart after Stevenson was released from his Zuffa Boxing contract, leaving Haney without a dance partner and the welterweight division in need of a headline fight.

Barboza made it clear this would not be a rematch with Teofimo Lopez, who beat him at junior welterweight. "It's not a rematch with Teo. Not yet. I got to win this belt to rematch him," he said.

The contract, training window, venue, and sanctioning body have not been finalized. A short-notice camp is always a risk, but Barboza sounded ready to jump at the opportunity regardless.

If the opponent is Haney, Barboza would need to navigate one of the sport's best defensive fighters. Haney's distance control, lead-hand work, and ability to smother opponents on the inside have frustrated every challenger he has faced at welterweight.

REY'S TAKERey Aguirre

I respect the energy. Most fighters in Barboza's position would ask for a full camp, negotiate for months, and price themselves out of the fight. He is sitting there going "a couple of weeks? Let us do it."

If this is Devin Haney, that is a tough ask on short notice. Haney is one of the most technically sound fighters in boxing right now. He does not give you openings, he does not take risks, and he makes the other guy look bad for twelve rounds. That is not the guy you want to face without a proper training camp.

But sometimes the short-notice guys are the most dangerous. Barboza knows this might be the only call he gets. There is something to fighting loose when you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The welterweight division is in chaos right now with Shakur out and fights falling apart left and right. Barboza could walk into a title shot that was not meant for him and change his entire career. Stranger things have happened in this sport.
