Brendson Ribeiro Pleads for Answers About Missing Brother After UFC Vegas 122 Win
Brendson Ribeiro used his post-fight platform to beg Brazilian authorities for information about his brother, who vanished in April.
Brendson Ribeiro snapped a four-fight losing streak with a guillotine choke submission of Felipe Franco at UFC Vegas 122 on Saturday. Then he used his platform to deliver a message that had nothing to do with rankings.
At the post-fight news conference, Ribeiro revealed that his brother, who he described as his blood brother from his father's side, disappeared on April 27 in the family's hometown in Brazil. Nearly six months later, the family still has no answers.
"We don't think that he's alive anymore," Ribeiro said through an interpreter, per Sherdog. "My dad is suffering. The wife is suffering. The brothers are suffering."
Ribeiro appealed directly to local officials, including the governor, the mayor, and law enforcement, saying the family feels it has no voice in the region. He asked for closure, including the return of remains if they can be found.
The 18-11 fighter carried that weight into the cage at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas and still managed to finish Franco in a fight that meant far more to him than a spot on the roster. For Ribeiro, the UFC stage was the only microphone loud enough to reach the people he believes have answers.
This is the kind of moment that cuts through all the noise. A guy fights his way back from four straight losses, submits his opponent, and then stands at the podium not to call out a ranked fighter but to beg for information about his missing brother. That takes a different kind of toughness.
I've covered enough fights to know that these athletes carry things into the cage that we never see. Ribeiro fought with something heavier than any weight cut. The fact that he feels the UFC platform is his only shot at being heard tells you everything about the situation his family is facing back in Brazil.
I hope the right people are listening. Whatever happens with his career from here, Ribeiro used the biggest moment of his night for something bigger than himself. Respect.
